We got off the beaten track and explored the lush tropical rain forest.   We harvested guavas, passion fruit, pomellos, oranges and coconuts.

We bushwhacked through the jungle and along a creekbed to reach a seldom visited part ot the nothern coastline.  Along the coastline we found numerous sprouting coconuts that had washed in from the sea. These are the best eating coconuts.  The milk gets transformed into a lovely sweet and slightly crunchy substance which fills the center of the coconut.   I opened one up by smashing it on a hunk of lava.  Yum!!

FRUIT STANDS

Fruit stands used various theft prevention methods.  The stand pictured above utilized a coconut cash receptacle taking advantage of the extremely resilient coconut shell to safeguard the cash.

This stand utilized the "Fire and Brimstone" theft prevention system.  Apparently it's almost 100% effective with Christian patrons.

CYCLING

We climbed the Volcano on road bikes which involved over 10,000 ft of climbing. The two pictures of me at the bottom capture the emotions of the climb.

Nearing the summit.  Crater rim in background.

North Shore surfing at sunset.

Aquatic activities.  The windsurfing, big wave surfing and boogie boarding pictures are not me. At left I am contemplating the huge South Shore surf.

Haleakala

Views in and around Haleakala crater.  We went on a hike in the crater and visited one of the cinder cones.  Very, very cool.
